One of the best gifts I was ever given for my overall wellness was the encouragement to get out of the city where I was living and to go travel.
At the time, I was in university, stressed out of my mind, and trying to figure out the next steps for my life, when my dad surprised me with a plane ticket to go see a friend of mine who was living in Buenos Aires. Along with the ticket he shared some of his wisdom: “There’s more to life than what you see here. There’s a whole other world out there that will teach you more than you’ll learn at school. And maybe you’ll find some sanity along the way.”
That experience changed me in ways that still resonate to this day. We hear it all the time; experience is the best teacher and I can tell you, it’s wholeheartedly true! What started out as a trip to see an old friend turned into a trip that built self-confidence through self-discovery. I came out of my shell a bit more with every new experience and became more confident in my ability to explore new areas of myself that I would have otherwise shied away from.
What I gained from travelling abroad
Buenos Aires is a big city and a busy place. After the first few days, I managed to get away from the hustle and bustle, and I made my way to the outskirts of the city where the pace was much slower, almost retreat-like. Despite the language barrier, there was a uniquely human connection made with each person I encountered on my journey. I am forever grateful for the lessons learned.
Travelling to a place where I was away from my usual comforts and habits had so many benefits! I gained so much, including:
- A greater sense of trust in myself and in the kindness of others.
- An appreciation and respect for other cultures and lifestyles.
- New and dear friends with people who were complete strangers.
- A new perspective on my own life and what really mattered to me most.
- Above all else, I realized just how much I had to be grateful for.
Getting out of my comfort zone
I think we can all relate to just how easy it is to get caught up in our day-to-day routine. When we start to do things on autopilot, we lose the sense of gratitude and appreciation for the little things. Travelling is an excellent way to hit the reset button and bring your focus back to what really matters to you.
My trip to Buenos Aires changed my life forever. Because of it, I’ve made it a point to travel as often as I can to places I’ve never been before.
In doing so, I have found that each experience has helped me find a piece of myself that had been pushed down or hidden. Travelling has allowed my authentic self to shine through in everything I do. It has given me a deeper appreciation for the little things making me a more grounded and centered individual.
If you find yourself on the fence about whether to invest the time and expense on travel, remember this: the only trip we regret is the one we don’t take!
