People talk about work/life balance all the time. It’s this unattainable ideal that people strive for, but many eventually realize is impossible to achieve. I was one of those people for many years, believing there were more hours in a day then there were. I balanced everything as best as I could so I would not drop any balls or fall flat on my face. Still, despite the daily fight to achieve this so-called work/life balance I could never seem to find it. It was the unachievable, Hollywood life that seemed completely realistic given the right job, the right hours, the right schedule, the right time management, the right organization. Here’s the thing, it wasn’t realistic.

I would strive each day to wake up and stick to a strict schedule, but it never panned out. Every day was different and no matter how tight I believed my perfectly planned and balanced schedule was. Something would be thrown at me out of left field and I would feel like I had failed. Mentally, this was dangerous, I felt out of control and the perfectly balanced life that was being portrayed by the people around me especially on social media, just made me feel terrible about myself. What I didn’t realize is that many of the people I thought had it all together, were floundering just as badly as I was. The lifestyle and balance they were trying to sell me, didn’t exist.

Then one day, after a particularly bad month of feeling like absolute shit about my life, which in reality, was awesome and I was extremely blessed, I woke up and I realized that it was all an illusion. Work/life balance didn’t exist. However, I was fully within my power to build a life design that made sense for me and brought me joy.

I finally felt free. I realized that balance was not the goal. As if my life could be likened to the scales of Lady Liberty, perfectly balanced and without even the slightest tilt! What I realized is that life is more a design of your own making. That design is and can be whatever you make of it. We are all capable of designing a life that works best for us, our health, family, career etc. The choices we make, the way we choose to divide our time creates this design and when we find the right design, it all fits together.

Now, I am not implying that this is an easy task. Designing a life, you love and feel whole in is a mountain of a journey. It takes years of refining, planning and trying different things. Then one day, you wake up and you feel like you’re on the right path. It won’t be perfect, far from it, but it will feel right for you in that time and space. You may find your life design changes daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, or you may find it stays the same for many years. It is totally up to you! The most important thing is that you feel well and happy in your life design. If you can wake up each day, and say I feel fulfilled and I feel happy, then you have achieved your version of the impossible and made it possible.

You are not only a fantastically kind and genuine person, Bree, but you are also very insightful and intelligent.
You are so right in what you say here. I hope everyone who reads this feels a little better today about themselves. Because each one of us holds greatness inside of us and we need to be a little kinder, gentler, more compassionate with ourselves.
